The latest BVI FSC figures on active companies and incorporations, with context on what Registry statistics do and do not show.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There were 362,165 BVI business companies on the Register at 31 March 2026.

  • Q1 2026 recorded 7,671 incorporations, up on Q1 2025 and down on Q4 2025.

  • Registry transaction totals provide market context but do not determine the closure route for a specific company.

If you are deciding whether to close a BVI company, quarterly Registry figures provide useful market context but do not change the steps required for your company. This update summarises the first quarter of 2026 and highlights the figures most relevant to owners reviewing dormant or no-longer-needed structures.

The figures provide useful market context. They show the scale of the Registry and changes in incorporation activity, but they do not determine whether liquidation, continuation, merger or another route is appropriate for a particular company.

How many BVI business companies are on the Register?

There were 362,165 BVI business companies on the Register at 31 March 2026. This is the active total reported by the Registry of Corporate Affairs for the end of the quarter.

How many companies were incorporated in Q1 2026?

The Registry reported 7,671 incorporations during Q1 2026. The bulletin states that this was 10.04% higher than Q1 2025, when 6,971 incorporations were recorded, and 12.61% lower than Q4 2025, when 8,778 were recorded.

The incorporation total includes new business companies, private trust companies, foreign companies and continuations. It should therefore be read as a broad registration measure rather than a count of one single company type.

Other registration categories

At 31 March 2026, the bulletin reported cumulative totals of 1,131 private trust companies, 35 non-profit organisations, 49 foreign companies and 2,934 continuations within the selected registration categories.

What do Registry transactions show?

The Q1 2026 bulletin records significant filing activity connected with beneficial ownership information and registers of members. It also reports 7,623 registrations of insolvency documents during the quarter. Transaction figures measure filings processed by the Registry; they should not automatically be treated as a count of companies entering or completing liquidation.

Is the BVI becoming more or less popular?

One quarter does not establish a long-term trend. Q1 2026 incorporations were higher than the equivalent quarter in 2025 but lower than the immediately preceding quarter. Seasonal filing patterns, legislative changes and transaction activity can all affect quarterly comparisons.

A more useful assessment looks at several quarters together, alongside the number of active companies and the types of Registry transactions being recorded.

How do statistics relate to company closure?

Market statistics do not replace a review of the individual company. A solvent company that has completed its purpose may be suitable for voluntary liquidation even when it has no assets or liabilities. The correct route depends on its status, records, ownership, filings and unresolved obligations.

The figures above are taken from the BVI FSC Statistical Bulletin for Q1 2026, published on 2 June 2026.

How often are the figures updated?

The FSC normally publishes the bulletin quarterly. Each article update should therefore identify the reporting period and publication date rather than presenting the figures as a live Registry count. The next bulletin may revise the market picture, so comparisons should always use the same measure and period.
